Revamping Your Garage Door
05/09/2014 Back To BlogIf your garage doors are looking a little tired and worn, you may be dreading the expense of replacing them. However the need to replace existing garage door is not always the case. In some instances you can revamp your doors using paint. This can improve it aesthetically and can also provide protection against harsh weather elements which can cause fading, chipping and rust.
Timing:
Timing of the paintwork is crucial. You’ll need the optimum temperature to ensure that it dries quickly and properly. You will also need a few days with no rain following the painting, so check the weather forecast. Garage door repair Apollo Beach advises that it is best to begin painting as early as possible in the morning to allow sufficient sunlight to finish the job and let it dry all day.
Preparation:
You need to fully prepare the surface to ensure a good quality of finish which will last longer. Remove any peeling paint or rust with sandpaper. It is also essential to remove any dirt or grime on the door which will prevent the paint from properly sticking. This can either be done with a low setting of a power washer or soapy water and a sponge. Ensure the door is completely clean including along the bottom seal where debris tends to accumulate. Let the surface fully dry before beginning to paint. It is also worth taking the time to prepare all the equipment you will need. To prevent paint from getting on the siding or aluminum frame cover the edges in tape. Lift the door slightly and lay a tarp, plastic or cardboard underneath to keep your garage floor free from spills and drips.
Painting:
After you have painted on a layer of primer, you need to apply the paint in thin layers, letting each coat dry before moving on to the next. You may find that by the time you finish the first coat, the other side of the door is dry and ready for the next coat. Use a small brush for any details and edging.
Revamping your doors using paint is a fairly inexpensive way of boosting the curb appeal of your home. However, even if the door feels dry, don’t be tempted to use your door openers until at least twenty four hours has passed to ensure it is completely dry.
